BMJ Learning module is up and running!
In response to requests from members to raise awareness of lymphoedema with GPs and other doctors, the LSN commissioned BMJ Learning to produce an online teaching aid to assist in the recognition and diagnosis of lymphoedema and chronic oedema, onward referral and to highlight how GPs can assist in the management of their patients’ condition.
Final filming of the module took place in September, when Professor Peter Mortimer was filmed in an interview situation by Dr Graham Easton, Deputy Director of Primary Care Education, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London, Charing Cross Campus, who subsequently became our first ‘better informed’ GP!! (Read Dr Easton's article.)
Now that the module is up and running, we are seeking the support of our members, and the members of the British Lymphology Society (BLS), to help us to reach GPs with this information. If you are a lymphoedema patient, on your next planned visit to your GP, we would like you to take a postcard (obtainable by calling the LSN office) to your GP and ask if s/he would consider completing the module as this may assist in helping them to help you manage your condition. Speaking to your GP personally will be far more effective than merely posting the information, as GPs are very busy people and research has shown that mass mailings are not recommended as the information is unlikely to be read.
If you are a lymphoedema practitioner, we would like to ask that those who wish to do so, include details of the module which can be viewed on the BMJ Learning website http://learning.bmj.com/learning/home.html in your assessment letters following referrals to you by your local GPs.
In addition, information regarding the module will be added to the healthcare professional section of our website. LSN representatives will also be attending a major GP conference in Liverpool, in October, where we will be promoting the module and will be encouraging as many attendees as possible to complete it; as an added incentive to do so, they will receive Continuing Professional Development recognition.
Please note, this module can only be
viewed on the BMJ Learning website and can only be accessed by healthcare professional members of BMJ. It will not be available on the LSN website.
BMJ Learning is committed to feeding back information to the LSN regarding the number of GPs who complete the module and will evaluate the outcome on our behalf.
