SELF-HELP VIDEOS/DVDs

Two videos have been produced as a joint project between the Lymphoedema Support Network (LSN) and the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The objective has been to produce two videos demonstrating techniques that will help control lymphoedema of the arm and of the leg. Each video covers the self-management aspects of care; including compression garments, skin care, exercises and in particular highlighting the simple lymphatic drainage (SLD) technique.

One of the main intentions is to show people with lymphoedema what they can do for themselves; it is for this reason that each video has been filmed in the homes of the patients taking part. The videos follow the sequence of the day, showing what can be done to control the swelling and also includes interviews which give an insight into how it feels to live with and learn to control this often life-changing condition.

Both videos feature a man and a woman; with the man demonstrating SLD and the woman showing the exercises, application of compression garments and skin care routine. Exercises are shown in sets of differing levels so that everyone can follow a sequence that is appropriate and safe for their needs and the accompanying verbal description provides more information about activities that will be helpful.

The videos - one for arm and one for leg swelling - have been produced to supplement information already provided by a lymphoedema clinic or a specially trained therapist. For those patients not in the care of a lymphoedema clinic or therapist, it is made clear how to use the activities shown. It also emphasises that some people should not use the video without first seeking medical advice. This includes people who are currently under investigation for cancer or who are in the early stages of treatment i.e. recovering from surgery, receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

These videos are also available in DVD format.

The price of each video, for a limited period only, is £6 (inclusive of postage and packing).

The price of each DVD is £12 (inclusive of postage and packing).

ORDER FORM FOR CLINICS

The LSN produces an on-going series of fact sheets covering a wide range of related topics including 'Swollen Feet and Legs', 'Coping with Lymphoedema following a Mastectomy or Lumpectomy', 'Skin Care', 'Holidays and Travel', 'What is Cellulitis?' and 'Healthy Eating'. LSN fact sheets are 'gold' standard, they are written by health care professionals, with additional input from LSN Trustees and members; and are reviewed by the Charity's Chief Medical Advisor before publication.

Revised LSN fact sheets 'Swollen Feet' (now 'Swollen Feet and Legs') and 'Genital Lymphoedema' are now available.

Fact sheets are free to members and a charge is made to cover publication costs and postage and packing for orders received from lymphoedema clinics and hospitals.

LYMPHOEDEMA ALERT BRACELETS

Hospital style medical alert bracelets are now available from the LSN.

The LSN has produced a useful plastic lymphoedema alert bracelet which is very helpful for patients who already have lymphoedema and need to go into hospital for any reason. It is also useful for those patients ‘at risk’ of developing the condition… and who wish to stay that way!

Wearing the bracelet during a stay in hospital will help to alert medical practitioners to the condition and will help to ward off unwanted attempts to take blood pressure readings and injections, etc. The bracelets have adjustable fittings and will fit most arm sizes. Should patients wish to wear a bracelet on a swollen leg, two bracelets can be clipped together.

The wording on the bracelet states: ALERT:LYMPHOEDEMA – No Blood tests, Blood Pressure, IV Access or injections in this limb.

Bracelets can be purchased from the LSN at £1 for one bracelet or £5 for six, including postage and packing.
